"Resurgam"

The other evening I was looking at “Resurgam”, the wall with planters, iron railings, gate and marble and brick arch that I built last year, and noticing how the plants complete the sculpture. The title is a bit of a conceit but appropriate all the same. It was written on a stone found in the rubble after St. Pauls Cathedral burned, and which Sir Christopher Wren used to mark where the centre of his dome. My Resurgam refers to; the half marble arch that I found on the street after a house had been demolished, the salvaged keystone, the railings I found in the backyard (some of which were made into a sculptural gate by Chris Wirth), and bricks salved by Beaty American from the Rittenhouse Hotel. All given new life when combined with my altered salt glazed bricks and formed into a garden sculptural wall.

My practice of digging up the discarded objects from the mid 19th century onwards, from the needle ridden alley ties in well with this piece.
